Building a national platform to support climate innovation, commercialisation and enterprise growth in Tanzania
Tanzania’s climate innovation ecosystem brings together innovators, enterprises, research institutions, technical agencies, financiers and other ecosystem actors. Yet promising climate solutions can struggle to move beyond early development into validation, demonstration, market adoption, finance and scale. The Tanzania Climate Innovation Centre (TCIC) is being designed to help bridge these gaps and strengthen the pathway from climate innovation to commercial application.
Tarutium Global Consulting, in association with Sahara Consult, is supporting the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), under the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) / UNEP programme, to design and establish TCIC. The assignment combines an assessment of Tanzania’s climate innovation ecosystem with insights from enterprises, public institutions, industry and finance, as well as lessons from international Climate Innovation Centre models.
The work is focused on understanding what exists, where the gaps lie, and what a national platform can do differently. This includes assessing the needs of climate-focused SMEs and innovators, identifying priority sectors and value chains, mapping institutional capabilities, and benchmarking international models. It also covers TCIC’s proposed functions, partnerships, skills and operating model, alongside requirements for infrastructure, digital systems, resource mobilisation and stakeholder engagement.
A key principle shaping the emerging model is that TCIC should build on Tanzania’s existing strengths rather than duplicate them. The Centre is being envisioned as a platform that connects climate innovators and enterprises with the technical expertise, buyers, regulators, financiers and partners needed to take solutions forward.
The sector assessment explores opportunities across climate-smart agriculture and food systems, clean energy and productive use, the blue economy, circular industry and resource efficiency, water resilience, low-carbon mobility, and nature-based solutions.
The ambition is to create a stronger institutional pathway for Tanzania’s climate solutions to move from innovation to validation, markets, investment and scale, while strengthening the wider ecosystem that enables climate enterprises to grow.
