The escalating impacts of extreme heat events, fuelled by climate change, have brought South and Southeast Asia to the brink of a public health crisis. Heatwaves are no longer isolated events but recurring threats that endanger millions of lives, disrupt essential services, and amplify health vulnerabilities, especially among the elderly, children, and outdoor workers. Recognizing this urgent need, the Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Heat and Health has been established as a joint initiative of Malla Reddy University and Tarutium Global Consulting to bridge the critical gap in research, policy, and preparedness.

The Centre was formally inaugurated on January 10, 2025, at Malla Reddy Vishwavidyapeeth, Hyderabad, by Dr Rakesh K. Srivastava, Senior Advisor, LEHS-WISH and Former Director General of Health Services, Government of India. The event brought together experts, policymakers, healthcare professionals, and community leaders. The launch began a transformative journey in addressing the pressing challenges of heat-related health risks. Attendees engaged in insightful discussions explored collaborative opportunities and reaffirmed their commitment to building heat-resilient communities across South and Southeast Asia.

At the heart of the CoEs efforts is a commitment to empowering individuals and communities. Through capacity-building programs, workshops, and specialized training, the Centre will equip healthcare professionals, policymakers, and local leaders with the tools and knowledge needed to combat the health impacts of extreme heat. This people-first approach ensures that the strategies developed are innovative, actionable, and inclusive. The Centre's short-term goals focus on establishing a strong foundation. In its initial phase, the CoE will prioritize launching pioneering research projects, developing early-warning systems, and creating awareness campaigns to address immediate challenges. It will also build strategic alliances with local and international stakeholders to foster collaborative solutions.

Over time, the CoE aims to become a beacon of excellence in heat-health resilience. Its long- term vision includes expanding its reach to additional vulnerable regions, embedding heat resilience strategies into public health systems, and driving policy reforms to create sustainable, adaptive frameworks for the future. These efforts aim to create a society where individuals are equipped to thrive in a warming world.

This Centre aspires to become a hub of innovation and action, addressing the multifaceted challenges of rising temperatures. By integrating scientific research with practical interventions, the CoE will provide evidence-based solutions that inform policy and strengthen community resilience. This center is established to leverage data-driven insights to predict and mitigate heat risks while fostering partnerships that amplify the reach and impact of its initiatives.

With its base at Malla Reddy Vishwavidyapeeth in Hyderabad, the Centre will serve as a regional and global collaboration model, setting a new standard for addressing the health impacts of extreme heat. The CoE endeavors to connect science, policy, and community action, paving the way for a resilient and healthier future for all.
